Church Meeting
I I attended my church meeting about changing the name of the church. This church, formerly known as St. James Missionary Baptist Church, is a predominantly African American church and a large percentage of them are family or grew up like family. Many of the members grew up attending this church, which is a rural church that has close ties to its community, so this meeting was very important and significant. They were getting ready to “break away from their traditions, memorialize their history, and begin anew,” as stated by the Pastor.
Surprisingly, the atmosphere was filled with excitement and anticipation. African Americans hold their traditions dear, especially regarding their church, which is seen as the center of the black community. I expected there to be some dissension and tension, but it was a joyous and happy spirit within the room. Nobody seemed mad or in their feelings about what was about to take place. Everybody was very excited and could not wait to start.
On the stage, you can see the new logo of the church inscribed on a purple banner. The logo was of the new name, The Word Church Worship Center, in gold and white, and written in white just under the logo were the words “Where God is transforming lives and doing the impossible.”
Everybody that attended the church was there, along with pastors and board members. The chairman of the Board, who is the Pastor, called the meeting to order. After they had prayed, instructions were given as to how the voting was about to take place. A board member would make the motion. Another board member would then second the motion. Then the Pastor would say, “All in favor stand,” Those in favor would stand while the clerk counted. This was important because, according to the bylaws, a vote of this kind must be carried by two-thirds of the membership. They even permitted those who could not attend the meeting to call in their vote. After that count was complete then, the Pastor would say, “All who oppose stand,” and that count would be taken as well.
Finally, the process began. What the people had been expecting and talking about for months was about to happen. The atmosphere was electric, everyone was smiling, and a joyous spirit was in the room. The motion was given, the question was posed, and everybody who agreed stood, which was the whole church. Then when she asked who opposed, nobody stood up. All you heard was people laughing and celebrating the new beginning the church was about to embrace. You can tell everybody that was in the church trusted the pastor's vision and know that they are being led by two extraordinary people who are truly doing God’s work.
